A Day in an Oiler's Life

The Oily Home Companion

OHCDayinanoilerslifeBlogBannerv1.jpg

Mastering how to include all the benefits of Young Living’s Essential Oils into your life and routine can be intimidating at times! Trust us, we get it. There’s so many ways you can enjoy and use them all! But sometimes all you need is a little inspiration from people who really know how to take advantage of YL oils from sun up to sun down. So in an effort to motivate you with some real life routines, we’ve asked some of our OHC members to share different aspects of their days from start to finish, giving you a peek into their beautiful, oily lives! So let’s spend the day together!

Krista Jung

• 1-2 oz of Ningxia Red every day around 10 am has helped me through this Winter with a supported Immune System and gives me energy to get through the day with a toddler! Cheers to that!

• I use Aminowise during every workout! As a personal trainer, I recommend it to every client and friend I have! I do pretty strenuous workouts and sipping this during them gives me the energy to push through! I finish it up within 15 minutes after which helps my recovery immensely.

• I make Thieves wipes by mixing 2 capfuls if household cleaner with warm water to have easy access! I’m constantly cleaning up messes!

• My son knows the routine for Nap time (12:00pm) and bed time (7:30pm) for his oils (Cedarwood, Lavender, and Thieves)! He loves helping set them up! This blend has worked magic for us!

• At 1:00pm While my son naps, I get my computer work done!  Diffusing Stress Away, Peppermint, and Citrus Fresh helps keep me calm yet focused and I love seeing it diffuse into the air!

• I like rubbing this blend of Digize and Peppermint on my tummy! Even better, I ABSOLUTELY love making a capsule with Digize Vitality and Peppermint Vitality to support my digestive system.

• At 9:00 pm I love my Friday facial routine! I start with my Art Gentle Cleanser to get my makeup off (daily!), then I use my amazing Satin Mint Scrub and feel like I’m at the spa! This removes dirt and dead skin cells! Yuck! I then finish with Jojoba oil and Frankincense! It also helps calm me down which is great before bedtime!

Stephanie Johns

• We start our day with oral hygiene. Love thieves toothpaste for the win!

• A cup of coffee or tea is wonderful with a drop of one or more of these Vitality oils!

• Oats and Thieves Vitality for breakfast!!

• Love using Savvy Minerals and knowing they are good for my skin! Toxin-free makeup is so refreshing!

• Love taking Young living supplements!!

• We also diffuse throughout the day to help support all the things that need supporting.

• Progessence Plus and Endoflex are two of my favorite oils to use everyday!!

• We usually diffuse oils during our home school routine. Some of our favorites are Brain Power, Vetiver, Cedarwood and Geneyus!

• Ningxia Red is a great afternoon treat.

• We use Thieves Laundry Detergent and wool dryer balls for toxin-free laundry! Just add a few squirts of your favorite essential oil to the wool dryer balls and toss in the dryer!

• We even use oils when we clean throughout the day!

• Time for a relaxing detox bath!

Marisa Marlow

1. Diffusing Peppermint, Lemon and Frankincense for a early wake up at 6:00 am.

2.  Maven Lipgloss at 7:00AM  I love the look and feel of Savvy Minerals lipgloss.  They are so versatile no matter your skin tone.

3. My daily Ningxia with Endoflex vitality, microgreens, Sulfurzyme, and Super B.  I take it every morning around 7:00 am.

4. Ningxia Red and MightyVites in the morning before school for us.

5. Lemon oil 2:00PM : My 2 year old likes to get into her sister's colors.  Lemon oil helped me get the markings off that were down our hall today.

6. Slique tea for this Mama in the afternoon is a nice treat.

7. Taco night means homemade salsa.  Tip with using vitality oils, start with one drop at a time and taste.  It doesn't take very much. For stronger oils, like basil, you can dip a tooth pick in the oil then add to your dish.

8. Chocolate mask 8:30 PM : It's spa night at our house.  This feels so good on your skin, making it feel so soft after you are done.  One trick is to follow the direction and use the double boiler technique. My fifteen year old tried a few months ago, putting it into the microwave.  No Bueno!

Elizabeth Ector

1. When I wake up, I apply Endoflex over my thyroid, and digize in a circle around my belly button.

2. Then I usually pick an emotional blend based on my mood or Frankincense to place in my palms, rub together, cup my hands over my nose and take 3 deep breaths before I spend time reading the Bible and journaling.  I rub the extra over my heart and behind my ears.

3. I love brushing my teeth with Thieves Dentarome Plus toothpaste and washing my face with the Mint Satin Facial Scrub. I’m not a morning person ha, so it helps me wake up and feel fresh!

4. Lavender Lip Balm and Orange Blossom Moisturizer before I start my Savvy Makeup Routine.  Which usually consists of Warm 2 as foundation, Dark 1 as contour, crowned All Over bronzer, Savvy Mascara, and Multitasker as brow filler!

5. I take a shot of Ningxia Red mixed with Red Shot (if I’m lucky) or Thieves Vitality as my afternoon pick-me up.

6. Digize usually goes around my belly button another time after dinner.

7. Cinnamint Lip balm is always in my purse or pocket on-the-go. If I have a hot date ;) or going out with friends, I like Oola Friends behind my ears and by my collar bone instead of perfume!

8. Nighttime: Thieves dental floss in addition to my morning routine.

9. I usually have a different blend each night for my diffuser.  One of my favorites is Patchouli, Orange, Vetiver and Clove.

10. Frankincense and Lavender all over my face plus the Acne Treatment Spot Treatment as needed, Digize on my belly (yep, one more time.), Dragon Time on my lower abdomen, Endoflex over my thyroid, and White Angelica on my shoulders (or another emotional blend based on how the day went.)

11. I actually sleep with my oil case in the bed next to me. If I wake up from a bad dream in the middle of the night I grab White Angelica and rub it on my shoulders, over my heart and breathe it in.

Megan Crowell

• Every morning before rushing out the door for school my 4 yo and I each enjoy a shot of Ningxia Red! 7:15am

• Every morning Madi gets “oils on” Thieves down her spine and Peace and Calming (or as she calls it listening and following directions oil) on her forearms and behind her ears to help her listen and follow directions.

• I’ll never be caught without Stress Away in the car, whether it’s traffic, people not pulling over for EMS or someone littering I always seem to need to roll this all over my neck while driving

• A few drops to my corn salsa with lime vitality really makes it pop!

• No fragrance and no sodium laurel sulfate are just two reasons I choose Thieves Dish Soap and Thieves Hand Soap.  #nonastytoxins

• One of the first toxins I switched out three years ago were the things I was washing my baby girl with.  The products I was using before that you’re probably using now are filled with harmful chemicals that cause things like infertility, asthma, cancer and more.  Once I learned about this how could I in good Conscience continue to slather her with chemicals like that! no way!  We’ve been using the Kidscents line for years now and it is so soft on her skin I don’t even need to use lotion on her!

• Thieves on my feet, Frankincense on my face, Endoflex on my throat and Joy over my heart.... errrryday!

Your personal daily routines may look completely different from the oilers above and their unique uses for Young Living oils, but remember–it’s just about finding what works for you and your lifestyle! Start small, and begin incorporating oils into aspects of your regimen, replacing other less natural products for oils to see how they work for you and your family! You’ve got this!

We would love to hear from even more OHC members on how you incorporate Young Living into your daily lives! Write a post and use the hashtag #OHCdayinanoilerslife, and you may be featured in an upcoming Insta post!

Do You Know What You're Putting On Your Skin This Summer?

The Oily Home Companion

joe-pizzio-AiW1GtwGGS0-unsplash.jpg

There’s one thing for sure, this time of year, there are two products we never leave home without— sunscreen and insect repellent. You may rub or spray these common products on your body without a second thought, but do you actually know what you’re putting on your skin?

Sunscreen

SunSkinCare02.jpg

Sunscreen is designed to protect your skin against UVA and UVB rays from the sun, preventing skin damage and potential cancers, including melanoma. Unfortunately, many of the ingredients used to get these effects can do harm, while trying to do good. Think that’s not a big deal? Sunscreen ingredients soak through the skin, and have been detected in blood, urine, and breast milk. So you could be taking a big risk each time you use them. Some of these ingredients, including oxybenzone, homosalate, and octinoxate, can block or mimic hormones. Others, including avobenzone, octisalate, and octocrylene, may cause allergic reactions. Inactive ingredients that are used as preservatives, including methylisothiazolinone, can also lead to allergic reactions. Vitamin A is commonly added to sunscreen as an anti-aging and antioxidant ingredient, but it can trigger the development of skin tumors in the presence of sunlight. It can also be called retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate, retinyl linoleate, and retinol. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are commonly used as the most effective ingredient in sunscreens, and are thought to be safe, but some forms of this can contain nano-particles that can be damaging to the lungs when inhaled.

Insect Repellent

SunSkinCare03a.jpg

Insect repellent is another summer necessities (no one wants west nile!). But unfortunately, these also carry many ingredients that can be toxic for the body, including DEET, cyfluthrin, and pyrethroids. DEET, or N, N Diethyl-meta-toluamide, is commonly used in most well-known insect repellents, but has been linked to skin blisters and irritation, seizures, memory loss, headaches, joint stiffness, and sometimes shortness of breath. It’s also linked to neurotoxicity that could lead to issues with motor skills, memory, and learning. Cyfluthrin is linked to neurotoxicity and could result in loss of coordination, muscle trembling, and behavior changes. It can also cause harmful effects in the blood, disrupt liver function, and cross the placenta to cause behavior changes to newborns. Pyrethroids are the most common class of repellent chemicals, and include lambda-cyhalothrin, prallethrin, metofluthrin, dl-allethrolone, d-trans-chrysanthemate, tetramethrin, phenothrin, and dl-transalethrin. These can become toxic to the central nervous system, and can cause dermatitis, asthma-like reactions, nausea, incoordination, and a burning sensation on the skin.

Yikes! That’s a lot of risk to take for the rest of the summer!

Safer Solutions

SunSkinCare03.jpg

You can throw out the sunscreen and repellent stashed in your bag, but don’t avoid protecting yourself from the harmful effects of the sun and mosquitoes. That’s why we LOVE Young Living’s Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 and Insect Repellent. They’re both chemical-free, but still EFFECTIVE at protecting your body!

Young Living Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 or SPF 10 contain zinc oxide, without the nano-particles, as its active ingredient to protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays. The inactive ingredients include lavender, Myrrh, and Frankincense oils for the added skin benefits and a pleasant aroma. It’s also sweat-resistant and doesn’t leave a white residue. These sunscreens have been tested by dermatologists and are hypoallergenic, so they are perfect for those with sensitive skin!

Young Living Insect Repellent is naturally derived and plant-based. It uses pure sesame oil, combined with a blend of essential oils, to repel mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas. Added essential oils include citronella, lemongrass, rosemary, geranium, spearmint, thyme, and clove. It won’t leave a sticky residue on your skin, or a harsh chemical smell. Instead, the added ingredients help moisturize the skin and leave a nice aroma to wear around for the day.

Fun Fact! This product also comes in wipes! Super easy for the kiddos and PERFECT for traveling, hiking, or any of your summer adventures!

Now you can enjoy summer! Got questions about Young Living’s mineral sunscreen or insect repellent? Send us a message.

Great Ways To Celebrate Your Dad This Father's Day

The Oily Home Companion

carly-rae-hobbins-334386-unsplash.jpg

Father’s Day is a day set aside for the purpose of showing all of the dads in your life how much they mean to you and how valued they are! Instead of the typical mug and tie with a card, opt to go the extra mile for your dad by giving him something extra unique and special this year.

One of the best ways to show a dad how special he is to you is to treat him to an activity he loves as a family. Go camping, take a bike ride, go for a hike or play a round of golf, get tickets to his favorite sports game, or put on a gaming tournament with his favorite video or board games. You can also host a Father’s Day BBQ to gather multiple generations of dads together! There’s nothing more special than creating space for your dad or husband to honor his own dad, or the dad he raised. For those who have passed, this would be a great place to honor their legacy and the life they lived!

Instead of a traditional card, make a video e-card with everyone telling dad how much he means to you! He can save it to his desktop or phone and access it anytime, anywhere, for a little encouragement when he needs it most. Pair that with a gift that will be unique, just like he is. Here are a few ideas for the fashionable, fit, tech-savvy, and outdoorsy men in your life! If your dad fits into multiple categories, mix-and-match gifts that will best support his passions!

1. Fashionable Dad

  • A month membership to a local gym so he can try out a new activity, like rock climbing, HIIT training, spin, or yoga!

  • Personalized Hydroflask water bottle to stay hydrated and keep his water chilled during long workouts.

  • Entry to an upcoming 5k, half marathon, or triathlon. Bonus: get an entry for yourself and include a training plan you can do together!

Stay Grounded With Finals Using Essential Oils

The Oily Home Companion

element5-digital-352046-unsplash.jpg

Finals and testing season can be some of the most stressful weeks of the year for students. Not only is there the intense pressure of passing, but also due to lack of sleep, little self-care, excessive caffeine intake, and more unhealthy snacking over long study sessions, this season can put excessive stress on the body. If this is sounding all too familiar for you or your kids, we have good news! This testing season can be different for you and your family with the help of Young Living essential oils.

1. Calm Your Nerves

HalfWidthBannerv2_nervesv1.jpg

One of the hardest parts of testing tends to be the pre-test nerves. Nerves make focusing even more difficult and can induce a stress response in the body that is far from comfortable. Here are a few oils that can help you ditch the nerves as you prepare for a test.

  • Lavender Essential Oil | Lavender is a Young Living favorite because of how versatile it is. You can carry Lavender with you to take a deep breath of this calming oil before you step into your testing room. You can also diffuse Lavender as you study, diffuse while you sleep to help your brain relax, or add to a warm bath for a moment of self-care at the end of a mentally exhausting day.

  • Stress Away Essential Oil Blend | Stress Away is the perfect essential blend to carry with you for a quick stress relief. Simply apply a drop to your wrists or neck before a test to ease the nerves. You can also diffuse this oil blend while you practice yoga or meditation in the morning to settle the brain and calm the body.

2. Stay Focused

HalfWidthBannerv2_stayfocusedv1.jpg

Despite this being a short season, it can be hard to stay focused. You’re at the end of the semester, you’ve been studying hard for weeks, you haven’t slept well, and now your brain is slowly slipping into summer mode. Use these essential oils to maximize your focus and end your semester strong!

  • Peppermint Essential Oil | Peppermint oil is a go-to at Young Living because, like Lavender, it is extremely versatile. Dilute with a carrier oil, then apply 1-2 drops to your chest or wrists before a test to sharpen your focus and wake up the brain. Diffuse alone or combine with Rosemary and Lemon essential oil while studying to keep your brain alert and connected.

  • Clarity and Brain Power Essential Oil Blends | These two essential oil blends are perfect for inviting alertness and focus. Like Peppermint, you can apply them to the skin before a test or diffuse as you study or drive to school.

  • Motivation Essential Oil Blend | If you’ve reached the end of testing and are needing that final push to get through, Motivation is there to help. Diffuse it as you prepare for your test, or simply breathe it in as you start to lose your drive to keep going.

  • DIY Roller: Confidence Essential Oil Perfume Blend | It’s easy to lose focus if you are doubting your ability to pass the test. If you need a boost of confidence, make your own perfume blend of Jasmine + Copaiba + Orange essential oils!

3. Support Your Immune System

HalfWidthBannerv2_supportimmunev1.jpg
  • Prioritize healthy behaviors. This one seems like a no-brainer, but we all need the reminder sometimes. Eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, SLEEP, and avoid the urge to drink excessive amounts of caffeine to stay awake.

  • Super C. Super C is a great supplement from Young Living that uses Orange essential oil to give the immune system a boost during vulnerable seasons.

  • ImmuPro. ImmuPro is loaded with antioxidants from wolfberry and mushroom powders, as well as zinc and selenium. Antioxidants help protect the body from illness by lowering the effects of oxidative stress in the body. As a bonus, ImmuPro also contains melatonin, which may be able to improve sleep!

  • Pure Protein Complete. Too busy to cook a balanced meal? Try a Pure Protein Complete smoothie, mixed with greens and berries! You can choose between two yummy flavors: chocolate or vanilla spice.

  • NingXia Red. Need an energy boost? Instead of grabbing another cup of joe, take an energy-boosting shot of NingXia Red!

4. Gifts for your Teachers

HalfWidthBannerv2_giftforteacherv1.jpg

While you may not be thrilled with the tests you are gearing up for, you can still show appreciation to your teachers. They have poured into you the entire semester, and are also feeling a bit of stress as the year ends. Once the test is over for you, they still have to score them, and determine final grades for the entire class. These gifts will help them stay focused and motivated as they close out their year too. Think about it. Do you really want your teacher grading your test with an exhausted, unmotivated brain? Don’t think so!

  • Stress Away or Tranquil Essential Oil Roll-on | Both of these essential oil blends are great to roll on the neck, shoulders, or chest during moments of stress to relieve the brain and create feelings of grounding and peace.

  • Lavender Hand & Body Lotion | One of the best forms of self-care is moisturizing the skin and covering the body with a pleasant scent. Lavender is great because it’s pleasant and helps relax the body!

  • Gratitude Essential Oil Blend | For the teacher that you are most grateful for this year, Gratitude is the perfect way to express your thanks. This can also help the teacher reconnect to their own gratitude for teaching!

Spring Forward with Fresh, Glowing Skin

The Oily Home Companion

HalfWidthBannerheader.jpg

While winter is a great time to cozy up under your favorite blankets, the dry, cold air can be harsh on your skin. The sun is warming up, so it’s time to spring forward with a non-toxic skin makeover! If you want to treat yourself to a day at the spa, go for it! Or you can enjoy the spa all season long in your home with these 10 non-toxic DIY treatments!

1. Spring Fresh Body Scrub

FullWidthBannerBodyScrub.jpg

Your skin has been through a lot this winter, but a body scrub can exfoliate the skin to remove dead skin cells and prepare the skin for a fresh start. Simply mix 1 cup brown sugar with ¼ cup olive oil and 7-8 drops of your favorite Young Living Essential Oils. If you’ll be going out into the sun, remember to stay away from citrus oils on your skin to avoid the risk of sunburn. Take your time rubbing the mixture into your skin, then rinse off with warm water.

2. Young Living Satin Facial Scrub

For your face, you can use your body scrub, or you can add an extra boost of brightening power with the Young Living Satin Facial Scrub. It’s made with Peppermint Essential Oil to give the same minty, cooling sensation you’d get at the spa!

3. DIY Face Mask

HalfWidthBannerFriendsMask.jpg

If you’d rather do a DIY face mask instead of the scrub, try this recipe from Young Living. Mix 1 Tbsp honey, 1 Tbsp bentonite clay, 1 tsp apple cider vinegar, 2-3 drops Geranium Essential Oil, and 2 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil. Add just enough water to form a paste. Spread a thick layer on your face, let it dry, then wash off with a warm, wet cloth.

4. Orange Blossom Moisturizer

HalfWidthBannerOraMoisture.jpg

Now that your face has been properly exfoliated, your cells are ready to be moisturized! The Orange Blossom Moisturizer can help your skin retain moisture, while also preventing against oil and shine for optimum brightness! Store the moisturizer in the refrigerator during your exfoliation process for added coolness!

5.  Epsom Salt Bath

FullWidthBannerBathtime.jpg

After you’ve exfoliated the body, relax in a warm bath mixed with a cup of epsom salt and 10 drops of your favorite Young Living Essential Oils. Some ideas: lavender + rose, lavender + cedarwood, cedarwood + vetiver, or frankincense + sandalwood. Add the oil to the salt and the salt under running warm water.

For an even more luxurious experience, reduce lighting, light a candle, diffuse your favorite essential oil blend, turn on calming music, and cut up cool cucumber slices to place over your eyes.

6. Lavender Hand and Body Lotion

HalfWidthBannerLavendar.jpg

Now that your skin is refreshed from head to toe, moisturize your body with Young Living’s Lavender Hand and Body Lotion. This cream will give you a relaxing, feminine feeling. For the men out there, you’ll still love the feeling of this lotion, but you can also try Genesis Hand and Body Lotion if that’s more your style.

7. Foot Soak

HalfWidthBannerFootSoak.jpg

A foot soak is a great way to give your feet extra care! Fill a large bowl with warm water, then add Sandalwood, Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood Essential Oil, or Tea Tree if you have funky feet from the winter. Once you’re done soaking your feet, wrap them in a warm towel to dry.

8. Lava Mint Softening Foot Scrub

Your feet carry you all day and have been stuffed in boots all winter, so give them a little extra love with Young Living’s Lava Mint Softening Foot Scrub. It is made with four natural exfoliants: black volcanic sand from Iceland, volcanic rock pumice from Italy, diatomaceous earth from the seas of Denmark, and coconut shell powder from France. Your feet will not only feel luxurious and appreciated, but they will be silky smooth for sandal weather!

9. Massage Swap

FullWidthBannerDragonTime.jpg

Your body is relaxed, so it’s the perfect time for a massage! You can go out for one, or have a massage swap with your significant other or roommate! You can create your own massage oil by mixing V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex with your favorite essential oil blend, or you can buy one of Young Living’s massage oils that gives you the vibe you’re looking for. Choose from Dragon Time, Cel-Lite Magic, Ortho Ease, Ortho Sport, Relaxation, or Sensation.

10. Beauty Treatments

FullWidthBannerNails.jpg

Your skin is glowing and renewed, so give yourself another confidence boost with a manicure and eyelash treatment! For your nails, choose a non-toxic nail polish brand like Butter, Dazzle Dry, Tenoverten, Sundays, and Côte. After your spa day at home, you will be ready for whatever new opportunities spring brings your way!

Healthy Alternatives to Easter Favorites

The Oily Home Companion

DSC03583edit.jpg

Hosting your friends for Easter lunch this year, but still wanting to stick to your health goals? We have you covered with these 3 easy tips for a healthier, yet still delicious, meal!

  1. Switch up your protein! Instead of choosing a protein loaded with saturated fat like ham or brisket, look for a lean protein option like roasted chicken or turkey. If you’re pressed for time, you can grab an organic rotisserie chicken. If you are cooking at home, you can use the Lemon Dill Dressing (recipe below) as the perfect flavor punch.

  2. Clean up your sides! Side dishes are the best way to add nutrients to your meal. Instead of only choosing mac’n’cheese, mashed potatoes, or creamed corn, add a variety of vegetables to the meal! Cook with small amounts of olive or avocado oil instead of using butter, and add flavor with fresh herbs, spices, or Young Living vitality oils instead of cheese and excess salt. Try out the recipes below for ideas!

  3. Reduce added sugar. Sugar can find its way into the meal from Easter egg candy to the dressing on the salad. Avoid sugar-sweetened beverages, consider stuffing the basket with a little less or healthier choices of treats, choose desserts without refined sugar, and make your own sauces and dressings!

FullWidthBannerPotato.jpg

  • ½ clove garlic, minced

  • 2 drops Basil Vitality

  • 2 toothpick swirls Nutmeg Vitality

Lemon Dill Dressing

FullWidthBannerDillDress.jpg

This dressing is the perfect addition to a simple, spring salad, or it can be used to flavor meat, asparagus, roasted potatoes, and more!

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup olive oil

  • 3 Tbsp dijon mustard

Healthier Carrot Cake

10-12 servings

FullWidthBannerCake.jpg

This recipe is adapted from the Laura Lee Balanced Dreamiest Carrot Cake.

Dry Ingredients:

  • 1 cup raw walnuts

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose gluten-free flour (Like Bob’s Red Mill)

  • 1 cup almond flour

  • 1 ¼ tsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp baking soda

  • ¼ tsp sea salt

  • ½ cup unsweetened shredded coconut

Wet Ingredients:

  • 2 cups shredded carrots

  • 8 oz container crushed pineapple in juice (not syrup)

  • ¾ cup honey

  • 3 large eggs

  • ½ cup avocado oil

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 2 drops Cinnamon Bark Vitality

  • 1 drop Nutmeg Vitality

Frosting:

  • 16 oz dairy-free, original cream cheese (Ex.: Kite Hill Brand)

  • ½ cup butter (can sub vegan butter here too)

  • ½ cup honey

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Spray a 10” deep quiche pan (ideally with removable bottom) with oil spray or grease with a thin layer of oil. Spread walnuts on a parchment paper-covered baking sheet. Roast 10-12 minutes, until slightly fragrant and toasted. Set aside when done.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together all dry ingredients, except coconut and walnuts. Add grated carrots to a blender and pulse until finely chopped (not pureed!). Add to a medium mixing bowl, along with remaining wet ingredients. Whisk thoroughly to combine.

  3. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients. Roughly chop walnuts and add ¾ cup to the batter, along with the shredded coconut. Mix well.

  4. Add batter to the prepared pan and spread in an even layer. Bake for 33-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out mostly clean. Allow to cool at least 1 hour before removing from pan.

  5. With a sharp knife, slice the cake into two discs. Laura Lee recommends to use a large, sharp knife and to push it into the center of the cake (from the side) then gently move the knife in a circle. Let the halves bake another 30 minutes.

  6. To make the frosting, combine all ingredients in the bowl of your standing mixer or in a mixing bowl, if using a hand-held mixer. Start on your lowest setting to mix the ingredients together, then increase the speed until the frosting is soft and fluffy. Frost the cake and assemble layers once it has cooled! You can top the cake with walnuts, shredded coconut, and/or crushed pineapple! If not serving immediately, store in the refrigerator.

Spring Break Travel Essentials Checklist

The Oily Home Companion

leo-rivas-130488-unsplash.jpg

Spring Break is your moment to escape the responsibilities of work and everyday tasks, and jump into the warmth and relaxing vibes of the season. If you’re hitting the beach or other sunny spots this year, don’t leave home without packing this 10 piece travel capsule of non-toxic products to protect your skin, boost your immune system, and ease any stressors that come with travel.

1. Young Living Sunscreen

MineralSunscreen.jpg

Sunscreen is our best defense against the negative effects of sun exposure, including wrinkles, sunburn, and skin cancer. If you’re not one to burn easily in the sun, that doesn’t mean you aren’t at risk for skin damage. Using a natural sunscreen will protect you from damaging rays, but will also allow you to get the benefits of the sun, such as vitamin D exposure. While we may be tempted to opt for higher SPF sunscreens, the higher SPF simply indicates a higher concentration of sun protectant chemicals, which means you may be applying a range of chemicals to your skin and letting those bake in the heat. No bueno! But we have good news! You can get protection from both UVA and UVB rays, and avoid harsh chemical ingredients, with Young Living’s Mineral Sunscreen Lotion. The formula is made from naturally derived plant and mineral based ingredients. This should be at the top of your list for any trips during spring and summer months! We like to stock up early to make sure we don’t run out!

2. Young Living Lip Balm

LipBalm.jpg

While you’re protecting your skin from the sun, don’t forget to also protect your lips! The skin on our lips is without sebaceous glands, which produce oil and naturally moisturize skin. They also don’t have melanin, which provides natural protection from the sun. Young Living Lip Balm is packed with vitamin E to provide moisture and protection for your lips! There are a few different balms you can choose from, including lavender, cinnamint, and grapefruit. Young Living Lavender Lip Balm is perfect for time in the sun!

3. Young Living Insect Repellent

InsectRepellant2.jpg

If you’re planning to be outside during the warmer months, insect repellent is a must! Many insects, like mosquitos, can carry harmful diseases, which is not the kind of souvenir you want to bring home from your trip! If you tend to say no to repellent due to the harsh, chemical smell or the sticky layer it leaves on your skin, we’ve got good news for you! Young Living Insect Repellent is made with citronella instead of deet, which is found in most store-bought repellents. Studies have linked deet to negative health effects such as rashes, headaches, dizziness, and brain fog. Not the price you want to pay to avoid insects. With Young Living Citronella, you don’t have to worry about fake citronella fragrance that fries your nose hairs. This repellant is light and airy. Pure citronella keeps away nasty insects, but also smells amazing! It has many other health benefits, too, such as promoting relaxation. Positives for the entire family!

4. Lava-Derm After-Sun Spray

Lavaderm2.jpg

While Young Living Sunscreen can protect your skin from sunburn and insect repellent can protect from bug bites, sometimes we forget to apply them often enough, or we end up on an outdoor adventure we weren’t expecting. For those moments, Lavaderm After-Sun Spray is there to help! This product provides immediate, temporary relief, and soothes your skin from painful, itchy sunburns or insect bites. Keeping this product on hand ensures that your family can continue enjoying your vacation despite the little mishaps that may happen along the way.

5. Young Living Essential Oils

Our bodies all respond differently to travel, so it’s important to pack essential oils to prevent and remedy whatever may come for you and your family. For stress during your travel days, try adding a drop of Stress Away behind your ears and on your wrists. For digestive discomfort, add a drop of Digize Vitality to your water. For quality sleep in an unfamiliar place, diffuse or add a few drops to your pillow of Lavender. For sore muscles after day of walking or running in the sand, soak in a warm bath and add a few drops of PanAway. For nausea or car sickness, have Peppermint handy to apply behind the ears or inhale for quick relief. You know your family better than anyone else, so take time to consider what needs may arise and gear up with the best essential oils for them!

6. NingXia Red Pouches and Thieves Hand Sanitizer

Traveling can be tough on the immune system, even if you’re feeling stress-free on the beach. Give your system an added boost by taking a NingXia Red Single shot each morning. These are antioxidant-rich, and made up juices and extracts of aronia, plum, blueberry, pomegranate, and exotic wolfberries. It never hurts to put up an extra guard against the bacteria you will find in airports, gas stations, public restrooms, and other shared spaces. Speaking of, Thieves Hand Sanitizer and Spray are a must have! When we enter a hotel room or rental we spray all the things commonly touched and the toilet, shower and sink. You can never be sure how clean they are or what the health is of those who came before you or even those cleaning.

7. AromaGuard Deodorant

Deodorant.jpg

Warmer weather brings on more sweat, which can bring on unwanted odors. Prevent the stink by packing your AromaGuard Deodorant. Young Living deodorants are aluminum-free and made up of natural ingredients, including coconut oil, beeswax, vitamin E, and pure essential oils. They also have two fresh scents to choose from: Mountain Mint and Meadow Mist. Forgot the deo? We have been known to use Thieves toothpaste or Tea Tree oil instead in a pinch!

8. Sunglasses

Sunglasses2.jpg

You know sun exposure can damage our skin, but did you know that it can also cause damage to your eyes? There are studies that suggest eye damage, such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and other eye problems, may be linked to overexposure to the sun. Look for sunglasses that include protection from UVA and UVB rays with about 95-100% blockage. Not only will you look stylish in your new shades, but you’ll also increase your chances of aging well with healthy eyes. Win-win! Pro tip: those antioxidants from Ningxia Red are good for your eyes too!

9. Water Bottle

SpringBreak_WaterBottle.jpg

Hydration is so very important for healthy skin, digestion, and body function. When traveling, it’s easy to forget to drink as much water as you usually do because it may not always be available. Drinking water from plastic bottles could increase your risk of being exposed to toxic chemicals from the plastic. Also, water from taps when traveling can’t be trusted and can be worse than some plastic water bottle sources. Prevent all of this by bringing your own water bottle, preferably one that filters and is BPA-Free. Some favorite brands are Hydroflask, S’well, Klean Kanteen, Camelbak, and bKr.

10. Beach Bag

If you’re hitting the sand on your vacation, don’t forget a canvas beach bag. Seems simple, but you don’t want to make the mistake of finding sand in your favorite purse or backpack for the following year. Find a beach bag with pockets and compartments so you can quickly pack in all of the items above for easy travel!

What are some of your favorite travel must-haves?
