Savvy Minerals 101

The Oily Home Companion

We love beauty, but how well do our beauty products love us back?

Most makeup lines, both luxury and budget, don’t take care to craft their products with safe and natural ingredients. Instead, to keep costs down, these products are loaded with synthetic ingredients  that can be harmful and toxic.

Your skin is your largest organ and also serves as a protective barrier between your internal systems and external contaminants. However, as hard as your skin works to keep you safe, it is still vulnerable to absorbing toxins through exposure to substances (like makeup!) applied directly to the skin.

That’s right, makeup goes beyond aesthetics and self-expression— it is also a factor in your holistic health. You can choose to turn a blind eye to the harmful ingredients you apply to your skin or you can nourish your skin with natural, clean products.  With Young Living’s Savvy Minerals cosmetic line, you won’t have to compromise your health for beauty!

wimg.lrxHdbTS1XwjcGkx1cX.jpg

Everybody deserves to enjoy makeup without stressing about toxic chemicals and harsh ingredients sneaking their way in. You can let go of the myth that beauty is pain— it’s NOT too much to look good with products that are actually good for you!

But where to begin? Finding trustworthy, natural products of superior quality can feel overwhelming. Good news: Young Living’s Savvy Minerals makeup line makes clean beauty seriously easy.

Savvy Minerals pride themselves on luxurious, natural beauty that doesn’t compromise quality. Their products are lightweight, free of soy and gluten, and come in a diverse range of colors and shades. They only use high-quality, non-toxic ingredients, but they don’t stop there! All their ingredients are also ethically sourced, made with ethical labor, and cruelty-free. Look good, feel good, and do good!

Screen Shot 2020-06-17 at 1.47.12 PM.png

Most beauty products are made with harmful ingredients like talc, bismuth, fragrances, Parabens, and Phthalates. These ingredients, to different degrees, are skin irritants, hormone and endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, and have been known to impact fertility and reproductive health. These are not ingredients you want soaking into your body day after day! If you’re curious to learn if your current cosmetics are hiding any of these damaging ingredients, check both active and inactive ingredients and you’ll be shocked to find a lot of “greenwashing.”

The Savvy Minerals Difference

Savvy Minerals never uses toxic ingredients in their products and instead opts for natural and beneficial ingredients, like:

  • Aloe: This plant-based ingredient helps replenish moisture so you can maintain a youthful, hydrated glow. It also contains antioxidants that nourish your skin.

  • Mica: This natural mineral adds sparkle and color to our products as an alternative to harsh chemicals and dyes.

  • Jojoba Oil: Extracted from the jojoba plant, this oil helps with oil control and is very moisturizing.

  • Kaolin Clay: Straight from the earth, this mild clay naturally absorbs excess oil and regulates sebum production.

  • Vitamin E: This antioxidant nourishes and promotes healthy skin.

  • Beeswax: A clean alternative to soy, our beeswax gently seals moisture into the skin and contains vitamin A to further boost hydration.

  • Aspen Bark Extract: This all-natural preservative has conditioning properties that help to smooth and soften skin.

Get Stocked Up for Spring!

The Oily Home Companion

Fresh air. New growth. New life! Spring is coming!

We clean house, we shed the layered look for shorter sleeves and bare ankles, we soak up the sunshine and breathe deeply the scent of flowers and grass that drifts in the warmer breezes of Spring. Are you so ready for it?! We bet you’re nodding eagerly at the thought of open windows and enjoying the outdoors again!

Before Spring gets here, it’s super important to get stocked up on ALL the items you need. Some of these items are SUPER popular and sell out during the spring and summer season. Here’s a great list of Spring-Must-Haves to order this month so have what you need, no matter what your spring looks like this year!

Must-Haves for Spring Break 2020

Hitting the beach? Road trippin’ to see all that you can see? Or just planning a staycation? No matter what your plans for Spring Break include, there are some Young Living essentials that you’re gonna want to pack!

collage 6.png

Ningxia Red and Ningxia Nitro

This dynamic duo should always make it into your travel plans! Traveling can be tough on the immune system, even if you’re feeling stress-free on the beach. Give your system an added boost by taking a NingXia Red Single shot each morning. If you aren’t keen on traveling with the big glass bottle of NR, opt for the pouches instead! They are soooo easy for traveling. These are antioxidant-rich and made up juices and extracts of aronia, plum, blueberry, pomegranate, and exotic wolfberries. It never hurts to put up an extra guard against the bacteria you will find in airports, gas stations, public restrooms, and other shared spaces. While you are go-go-go on your exciting travels, keep your energy levels up with a little Ningxia Nitro! Don’t let yourself get too pooped to party!

Young Living Insect Repellent & Wipes

Bugs...quite likely the ONLY drawback to warmer weather. They come out and are hungry! If you are ready to enjoy time outdoors and you want to avoid itchy insect bites, you want this in your oily arsenal! Young Living Insect Repellent is made with a variety of essential oils instead of deet, which is found in most store-bought repellents. Studies have linked deet to negative health effects such as rashes, headaches, dizziness, and brain fog. Not the price you want to pay to avoid insects. With Young Living’s blend of oils in this repellent, you don’t have to worry about fake citronella fragrance that singes your nose hairs with a pungent smell. This natural oil fragrance is light and airy. Pure Citronella, Lemongrass, Spearmint, Clove, Rosemary, Geranium and Thyme keep away nasty insects, but also smell amazing!

Lavaderm After-Sun Spray

Forget to reapply that mineral sunscreen or insect repellent? It happens to the best of us. Fortunately this product provides immediate, temporary relief, and soothes your skin from painful, itchy sunburns or insect bites. Keeping Lavaderm on hand ensures that your family can continue enjoying your vacation despite the little mishaps that may happen along the way.

YL Vitality Drops — Stock up!

You’ve heard it before, haven’t you? Upping your water intake and staying hydrated is so crucial for our health! Thank goodness, Young Living just released the NEW YL Vitality Drops! If you love flavored water but don’t want to ingest artificial colors/flavors/sweeteners, these are for you! There are two flavors to pick from--Grapefruit Bergamot and Lavender Lemonade. Drooling yet? These pocket size drops are ready to travel when you are!

Kidscents SniffleEase & Owie

Whether you have kids or not, these two oil blends are great to keep on hand. Get a bump or scratch that needs a little TLC? Roll on some Owie! Diffuse or swipe on SniffleEase or RC before heading outside or opening up the windows.

Young Living’s Mineral Sunscreen — Stock up early!

YL’s Mineral Sunscreen is reef safe and helps fight against the negative effects of sun exposure, including wrinkles, sunburn, and sun spots. If you’re not one to burn easily in the sun, that doesn’t mean you aren’t at risk for skin damage. You can get protection from both UVA and UVB rays, and avoid harsh chemicals with this sunscreen. The formula is made from naturally derived plant oils, non-nano Zinc, and mineral based ingredients. This should be at the top of your list for any trips during spring and summer months! We stock up early and make sure we have it on hand for those intensely sunny Spring days that are chilly but BRIGHT  on our necks and faces!

collage 2.jpg

Thieves Hand Sanitizer and Spray

When we enter a hotel room or rental we spray all the things commonly touched plus the toilet, shower, and sink. You can never be sure how clean they are or what the health status was of those who came before you or even those cleaning between stays.

Young Living Deodorants

Warmer temps=more sweat! It’s just how it goes. Don’t let yourself get stinky! Make sure to pack your favorite YL deodorant and you’ll be fresh for your whole trip. Choose from CinnaFresh or CitraGuard.

Essentialzymes - 4

It’s a daily year round supplement for most of us, but being armed with these or any YL Enzymes before vacation feasting is important and will surprise you at how well they work! Support your digestive system with a daily dose of Essentialzymes-4, a mix of plant and animal enzymes which help improve nutrient digestion/absorption and the breakdown of fats, proteins, and carbs. The blend of essential oils are designed to soothe the stomach--relief that anyone with travel gut would welcome!

collage 3.jpg

Lavender Essential Oil

You’ve probably heard this referred to as the “swiss army knife” of oils or people’s “just in case oil.” It so is! We take it in our pocket everywhere we go when on vacation and for those times where you missed a spot and stay out too long in the middle of the day, soothe away!

Super C & Thieves lozenges

A travel-friendly way to support your body on the go. When we vacation, we are naturally exposed to a TON of different germs than our bodies are used to at home, so it’s important to not only WASH HANDS but also stay consistent with your supplements. Super C contains essential oils (Orange, Tangerine, Grapefruit, Lemon, and Lemongrass) which not only give it the best scent and flavor, but also offer super high levels on bioflavonoids which help the body absorb and use vitamin C. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that is critical for skin health, production of white blood cells which protect against infection, and fight inflammation. It’s kind of a big deal!! Thieves Lozenges use the power of YL’s Thieves essential oil blend to support the immune system and freshen your breath! Stash some of these in your pockets or purse for take off if you are flying or save them as your after-dinner “mint” while out on the town!

Young Living Lip Balm

While you’re protecting your skin from the sun, don’t forget to also protect your lips! The skin on our lips is without sebaceous glands, which produce oil and naturally moisturize skin. They also don’t have melanin, which provides natural protection from the sun. Young Living Lip Balm is packed with vitamin E to provide moisture and protection for your lips! There are a few different balms you can choose from, including lavender, cinnamint, and grapefruit.

collage 4.jpg

Peppermint Vitality & DiGize Essential Oils

Peppermint Vitality offers a cooling sensation for sore tummies and may provide relief for those who suffer with motion sickness. It is a great companion oil for DiGize. DiGize can be applied topically or ingested if using DiGize Vitality. The eight oils in this blend are known for supporting different aspects of normal digestion. Make sure you have these as options to keep your belly happy & healthy!

AlkaLime

This supplement can be taken daily or as needed. It is an acid-neutralizing mineral formulation that helps balance your pH and boost blood alkalinity. Especially needed for those who eat or indulge in animal protein or sugary, processed or acidic foods.

Diffuse the Situation

First things first...you don’t want to travel anywhere without your diffuser! Think of all the possible reasons to have it on hand! Is last night’s seafood stinking up your hotel room? Break out that diffuser and some Citrus Fresh! Are you having a hard time settling in and sleeping in this “not your room, not your bed” place? Load up the Cedarwood and Lavender and catch some zzzz’s while enjoying the familiar scents you use at home. Are you feeling extra cautious about the air? Diffuse Thieves to help keep your air clean and fresh! If you need a little noise or a night light, opt for YL’s Feather the owl diffuser--cute and complete with sound machine function and night light!

Complement the change in season with some diffuser blends that are sure to put some pep in your step this Spring! Here are some of our recent favorites:

Springtime inspires us to seize the day—whether it’s working on our personal wellness or on our sense of adventure! Maybe we work on both this year?! And remember, as far as travel goes, no matter if you stay home or go out on the road, you’re going to want to make sure you have your favorite products alongside. Keep in mind that certain high demand items go in and out of stock throughout the season (i.e. Mineral Sunscreens, Lavaderm, Insect Repellent, etc).  Don’t get caught without something you need! Take inventory of your YL products and make sure to update your monthly ER order to make sure you’re prepared for all that the Spring holds!

Kathy’s Elderberry-Wolfberry Syrup

The Oily Home Companion

burchfieldelderberrywolfberrysyrupessentialoils.jpg

Women have been gathering for centuries around quilts, tables, committees, ball fields, and classes to fellowship, pass along wisdom and learn from one another. Elderberry Syrup making parties have swept the nation as did once frequented gatherings of scrapbooking side by side.

It's something that OHC member Kathy Denson found herself offering her community, and she is so glad she did!

"For us, it was coming together to do something so simple but sometimes for busy women, it is a lot less intimidating to try something new with a few friends by your side. Buying the items, splitting the cost, and making one big batch to divide among families just makes sense. We look forward to doing this again."

Kathy shared her Elderberry Syrup recipe and the best part? It is infused with Young Living's vitality oils and Ningxia Wolfberries for extra immune support! This is optional, of course, and if the wolfberries aren't in stock, increase the elderberries to compensate.

elderberry-syrup-collage.png

INGREDIENTS

Elderberry – Wolfberry Syrup:

  • 3 ½ cups water

  • 1/3 cup of dried elderberries

  • 1/3 cup of dried wolfberries

  • 1 cup of raw honey

  • 5 drops of Thieves Vitality

  • 3 drops of Orange or any Citrus Vitality

  • This recipe can be made on the Stove Top takes about or in the Instant Pot (much faster) It makes approximately 2 3/4 cups of Syrup.

Stove Top Directions:

  • Add berries and water to a large saucepan and bring to a boil, lower heat and simmer until liquid reduces by half (takes about an hour)

  • Using a spoon mash the berries and then pour through a strainer into a large bowl.  Add the honey and once you have it mixed in well add the essential oils.  Pour Syrup into jars or bottles.

Instant Pot Directions:

  • Add berries and water into the Instant Pot and cook for 8 minutes. Allow for the natural pressure release. Stain the liquid from the berries into a large bowl.  If the liquid measures more than 1 ¾ cups place back in the Instant Pot and using the Saute setting reduce liquid to 1 ¾ cups (watching it carefully) Once liquid has reduced pour into large glass bowl and add the honey and essential oils.  Place syrup into jars or bottles.

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 cups gluten free oats to make oat flour (old-fashioned oats blended to a flour)

  • 1.5 teaspoons baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce

  • 1/2 cup Monk fruit, Stevia, or other powdered sweetener of your choice

  • 1/4 cup Choc Zero Maple Syrup [Sugar Free] (can replace with honey, pure maple syrup, or agave; but it will not be sugar free)

  • Handful chopped nuts (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

  2. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone liners.

  4. Add the applesauce and powdered sugar substitute of choice to a larger bowl.

  5. Beat on high with a mixer until light and creamy for 3-5 minutes. Note, if you’re making dough to eat, you don’t have to be as meticulous with whipping the applesauce and sugar substitutes. BTW, the dough tastes amazing!

  6. Add the Choc Zero Maple Syrup and vanilla extract.

  11. Drop the dough by tablespoonfuls onto the prepared baking sheets. Scrape the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula to get as much dough as possible.

  12. You can leave them as they are or flatten them slightly with bottom of a glass cup. Just note that they will not spread while baking. They will stay in the shape you leave them.

  13. Bake until the edges are golden, 11-13 minutes.

  14. Remove the trays from the oven, and let the cookies cool on the trays for 2 minutes.

  15. Using a spatula, transfer the cookies to a wire rack to finish cooling completely.

NOTES

Baked Chicken and Sweet Potatoes with Dairy-Free Avocado Cilantro Lime Cream Sauce

The Oily Home Companion

The-Oily-Home-Companion-Recipe-Chicken-Cilantro-Sweet-Potato-Avocado-Dairy-Free-Cream-Coconut-Milk-Lime-Vitality-Essential-Oil.jpg

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 small avocado

  • ¾ cup canned coconut milk

  • 1/3 cup fresh cilantro

  • 6 drops of Lime Vitality Essential Oil

  • 4-6 tbsp water

  • ¼ tsp sea salt

  • Olive oil

  • 4 chicken breasts

  • 2 large sweet potatoes

DIRECTIONS

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

  • Dice up sweet potatoes and put into a mixing bowl. Drizzle oil over with a spoon and add salt and pepper and toss.

  • Pour potatoes in a single layer on a cookie sheet. Cook for about 25 minutes or until desired softness.

  • On a separate pan, bake raw chicken. Depending on the size of the chicken breasts, you may want to slice the chicken breasts so they cook a bit faster.

  • Since chicken will be topped with cream sauce, it will only need to be seasoned with a little bit of salt and pepper. If you want to add a little spice, paprika is a nice touch!

  • Cook chicken about 20 minutes in the same oven.

  • Next, combine the rest of the ingredients except the water in a food processor and process until thick and smooth.

  • Add in the water a tablespoon at a time and then process until desired thickness is achieved.

  • Drizzle avocado cilantro cream sauce over baked sweet potatoes and chicken.

  • Can serve with rice, pasta, or whatever you would like. Garnish with leftover cilantro and enjoy!
