Happy, Healthy Memorial Day Recipes

The Oily Home Companion

FullWidthBanner copy.jpg

Memorial Day is a day we honor the men and women who have lost their lives serving our country. It’s a great time to be thankful for the freedoms we have, and to share that gratitude with family and friends! Since everyone’s off work and the kids are out of school, Memorial Day is the perfect day to kick off summer with a backyard cookout! Try out these recipes this year for healthier alternatives that will highlight the fresh flavors of summer!

Rosemary Balsamic Chicken Kabobs

Serves 4-6

FullWidthBannerkabob.jpg

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs chicken, cut into 1 in cubes

  • ⅓ cup olive oil

  • ⅔ cup balsamic vinegar

  • 4 drops Rosemary Vitality essential oil

  • 2 drops Black Pepper Vitality essential oil

  • 5 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 Tbsp coconut aminos

  • Vegetables for the kabobs: mushrooms, zucchini, yellow squash, and cherry tomatoes

Directions:

  1. Add chicken and all ingredients except the vegetables to a bowl. Toss to mix the ingredients together and make sure the marinade covers the chicken. Cover and let sit in the refrigerator overnight, 12-24 hours.

  2. Prep your vegetables by cutting them into ½ inch slices or halving them to fit onto the kabob sticks.

  3. Assemble your kabobs by alternating between each type of vegetable and the chicken. Either cook on your grill, or in a large skillet on your stove top, about 5 minutes on each side, until the chicken is cooked through.

Stay Grounded With Finals Using Essential Oils

The Oily Home Companion

element5-digital-352046-unsplash.jpg

Finals and testing season can be some of the most stressful weeks of the year for students. Not only is there the intense pressure of passing, but also due to lack of sleep, little self-care, excessive caffeine intake, and more unhealthy snacking over long study sessions, this season can put excessive stress on the body. If this is sounding all too familiar for you or your kids, we have good news! This testing season can be different for you and your family with the help of Young Living essential oils.

1. Calm Your Nerves

HalfWidthBannerv2_nervesv1.jpg

One of the hardest parts of testing tends to be the pre-test nerves. Nerves make focusing even more difficult and can induce a stress response in the body that is far from comfortable. Here are a few oils that can help you ditch the nerves as you prepare for a test.

  • Lavender Essential Oil | Lavender is a Young Living favorite because of how versatile it is. You can carry Lavender with you to take a deep breath of this calming oil before you step into your testing room. You can also diffuse Lavender as you study, diffuse while you sleep to help your brain relax, or add to a warm bath for a moment of self-care at the end of a mentally exhausting day.

  • Stress Away Essential Oil Blend | Stress Away is the perfect essential blend to carry with you for a quick stress relief. Simply apply a drop to your wrists or neck before a test to ease the nerves. You can also diffuse this oil blend while you practice yoga or meditation in the morning to settle the brain and calm the body.

2. Stay Focused

HalfWidthBannerv2_stayfocusedv1.jpg

Despite this being a short season, it can be hard to stay focused. You’re at the end of the semester, you’ve been studying hard for weeks, you haven’t slept well, and now your brain is slowly slipping into summer mode. Use these essential oils to maximize your focus and end your semester strong!

  • Peppermint Essential Oil | Peppermint oil is a go-to at Young Living because, like Lavender, it is extremely versatile. Dilute with a carrier oil, then apply 1-2 drops to your chest or wrists before a test to sharpen your focus and wake up the brain. Diffuse alone or combine with Rosemary and Lemon essential oil while studying to keep your brain alert and connected.

  • Clarity and Brain Power Essential Oil Blends | These two essential oil blends are perfect for inviting alertness and focus. Like Peppermint, you can apply them to the skin before a test or diffuse as you study or drive to school.

  • Motivation Essential Oil Blend | If you’ve reached the end of testing and are needing that final push to get through, Motivation is there to help. Diffuse it as you prepare for your test, or simply breathe it in as you start to lose your drive to keep going.

  • DIY Roller: Confidence Essential Oil Perfume Blend | It’s easy to lose focus if you are doubting your ability to pass the test. If you need a boost of confidence, make your own perfume blend of Jasmine + Copaiba + Orange essential oils!

3. Support Your Immune System

HalfWidthBannerv2_supportimmunev1.jpg
  • Prioritize healthy behaviors. This one seems like a no-brainer, but we all need the reminder sometimes. Eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, SLEEP, and avoid the urge to drink excessive amounts of caffeine to stay awake.

  • Super C. Super C is a great supplement from Young Living that uses Orange essential oil to give the immune system a boost during vulnerable seasons.

  • ImmuPro. ImmuPro is loaded with antioxidants from wolfberry and mushroom powders, as well as zinc and selenium. Antioxidants help protect the body from illness by lowering the effects of oxidative stress in the body. As a bonus, ImmuPro also contains melatonin, which may be able to improve sleep!

  • Pure Protein Complete. Too busy to cook a balanced meal? Try a Pure Protein Complete smoothie, mixed with greens and berries! You can choose between two yummy flavors: chocolate or vanilla spice.

  • NingXia Red. Need an energy boost? Instead of grabbing another cup of joe, take an energy-boosting shot of NingXia Red!

4. Gifts for your Teachers

HalfWidthBannerv2_giftforteacherv1.jpg

While you may not be thrilled with the tests you are gearing up for, you can still show appreciation to your teachers. They have poured into you the entire semester, and are also feeling a bit of stress as the year ends. Once the test is over for you, they still have to score them, and determine final grades for the entire class. These gifts will help them stay focused and motivated as they close out their year too. Think about it. Do you really want your teacher grading your test with an exhausted, unmotivated brain? Don’t think so!

  • Stress Away or Tranquil Essential Oil Roll-on | Both of these essential oil blends are great to roll on the neck, shoulders, or chest during moments of stress to relieve the brain and create feelings of grounding and peace.

  • Lavender Hand & Body Lotion | One of the best forms of self-care is moisturizing the skin and covering the body with a pleasant scent. Lavender is great because it’s pleasant and helps relax the body!

  • Gratitude Essential Oil Blend | For the teacher that you are most grateful for this year, Gratitude is the perfect way to express your thanks. This can also help the teacher reconnect to their own gratitude for teaching!

Create a Self-Care Kit for all the Moms in Your Life!

The Oily Home Companion

jonathan-gallegos-733815-unsplash.jpg

Mother’s Day is one of the most important days of the year, but have you ever been stumped on what to gift your mom, grandmom, or the mother of your children? How do you sum up your gratitude for everything that your mom has done for you in one gift? While it’s clearly impossible to show that level of appreciation with a gift, getting her something unique that helps her practice self care comes pretty close! This year, treat her to the ultimate self care kit with the help of Young Living!

Here are some ideas for your kit!

1. Reading Materials

FullWidthBanner_MomBlog_readingv1.jpg

A new magazine or book is a great addition to your self care kit to give your mom something to focus on, instead of her many responsibilities she juggles each day. You can also make your own book with photos of family, drawings, and thoughtful notes from her loved ones!

2. Lavender Sugar Scrub

HalfWidthBanner_lavenderscrubv1.jpg

This easy recipe is something she can enjoy at the end of a long day to treat her skin and help her relax.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1/2 cup oil (olive or coconut oil)

  • 7-10 drops lavender essential oil

Instructions:

Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix together.  You can add more or less oil to your liking. Store in an airtight container. Since this recipe doesn’t contain any preservatives it’s best if it’s used within a month!

3. Loofah Soaps

HalfWidthBanner_soapv1.jpg

Homemade soaps are always a fun gift because they’re unique, and practical.

Ingredients:

  • Melt and pour soap base (click here and here for examples)

  • Essential oils—see our suggestions below

  • Silicone soap mold of choice (like this one)

Instructions: Use a double boiler on your stove at home and melt 12 oz (1.5 cups) of a melt & pour soap base of your choice. Remove from heat and add 30-40 drops of essential oils. Fill into your soap molds (you’ll want to do this quickly so that the mixture doesn’t become solid or curdled during the process). Cool for 1 hour, remove from molds, enjoy!

Essential oil combination ideas:

  • Relaxing retreat: Peace & Calming® with Copaiba

  • Floral foam: Lavender with Geranium

  • Calming cleanse: Patchouli with Cardamom

4. Hair Mask

FullWidthBanner_hairmaskv1.jpg

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 5 drops Frankincense essential oil

Instructions

HalfWidthBanner_perfumev1.jpg

7. Essential Oil Blends

HalfWidthBanner_eoblendsv1.jpg

Want to help your mom take self-care to another level? Gift Valor, Gratitude, Release, Stress Away, and Tranquil essential oil blends to give mom moments of peace, calming, and grounding when she needs them the most!

8. Young Living Calming Bath Bombs

These natural bath bombs are made without colorants, synthetic preservatives, parabens, or animal-derived ingredients, making them some of the best bath bombs you can get your hands on! They’re the perfect addition to any Mother’s Day basket.

Moms deserve the best, but the greatest gift you can give yours is your attention, love, and appreciation for everything they have done for you! If your mom is a quality-time person, you could give her the gift of a DIY day where you create this spa kit together, then give her space to enjoy it while you cook her a meal or help clean up around the house. Your mom is unique, so take these ideas and make them your own to best fit her personality! And for all the moms out there, we appreciate everything you do every single day. You truly are a rockstar.

Spring Forward with Fresh, Glowing Skin

The Oily Home Companion

HalfWidthBannerheader.jpg

While winter is a great time to cozy up under your favorite blankets, the dry, cold air can be harsh on your skin. The sun is warming up, so it’s time to spring forward with a non-toxic skin makeover! If you want to treat yourself to a day at the spa, go for it! Or you can enjoy the spa all season long in your home with these 10 non-toxic DIY treatments!

1. Spring Fresh Body Scrub

FullWidthBannerBodyScrub.jpg

Your skin has been through a lot this winter, but a body scrub can exfoliate the skin to remove dead skin cells and prepare the skin for a fresh start. Simply mix 1 cup brown sugar with ¼ cup olive oil and 7-8 drops of your favorite Young Living Essential Oils. If you’ll be going out into the sun, remember to stay away from citrus oils on your skin to avoid the risk of sunburn. Take your time rubbing the mixture into your skin, then rinse off with warm water.

2. Young Living Satin Facial Scrub

For your face, you can use your body scrub, or you can add an extra boost of brightening power with the Young Living Satin Facial Scrub. It’s made with Peppermint Essential Oil to give the same minty, cooling sensation you’d get at the spa!

3. DIY Face Mask

HalfWidthBannerFriendsMask.jpg

If you’d rather do a DIY face mask instead of the scrub, try this recipe from Young Living. Mix 1 Tbsp honey, 1 Tbsp bentonite clay, 1 tsp apple cider vinegar, 2-3 drops Geranium Essential Oil, and 2 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil. Add just enough water to form a paste. Spread a thick layer on your face, let it dry, then wash off with a warm, wet cloth.

4. Orange Blossom Moisturizer

HalfWidthBannerOraMoisture.jpg

Now that your face has been properly exfoliated, your cells are ready to be moisturized! The Orange Blossom Moisturizer can help your skin retain moisture, while also preventing against oil and shine for optimum brightness! Store the moisturizer in the refrigerator during your exfoliation process for added coolness!

5.  Epsom Salt Bath

FullWidthBannerBathtime.jpg

After you’ve exfoliated the body, relax in a warm bath mixed with a cup of epsom salt and 10 drops of your favorite Young Living Essential Oils. Some ideas: lavender + rose, lavender + cedarwood, cedarwood + vetiver, or frankincense + sandalwood. Add the oil to the salt and the salt under running warm water.

For an even more luxurious experience, reduce lighting, light a candle, diffuse your favorite essential oil blend, turn on calming music, and cut up cool cucumber slices to place over your eyes.

6. Lavender Hand and Body Lotion

HalfWidthBannerLavendar.jpg

Now that your skin is refreshed from head to toe, moisturize your body with Young Living’s Lavender Hand and Body Lotion. This cream will give you a relaxing, feminine feeling. For the men out there, you’ll still love the feeling of this lotion, but you can also try Genesis Hand and Body Lotion if that’s more your style.

7. Foot Soak

HalfWidthBannerFootSoak.jpg

A foot soak is a great way to give your feet extra care! Fill a large bowl with warm water, then add Sandalwood, Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood Essential Oil, or Tea Tree if you have funky feet from the winter. Once you’re done soaking your feet, wrap them in a warm towel to dry.

8. Lava Mint Softening Foot Scrub

Your feet carry you all day and have been stuffed in boots all winter, so give them a little extra love with Young Living’s Lava Mint Softening Foot Scrub. It is made with four natural exfoliants: black volcanic sand from Iceland, volcanic rock pumice from Italy, diatomaceous earth from the seas of Denmark, and coconut shell powder from France. Your feet will not only feel luxurious and appreciated, but they will be silky smooth for sandal weather!

9. Massage Swap

FullWidthBannerDragonTime.jpg

Your body is relaxed, so it’s the perfect time for a massage! You can go out for one, or have a massage swap with your significant other or roommate! You can create your own massage oil by mixing V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex with your favorite essential oil blend, or you can buy one of Young Living’s massage oils that gives you the vibe you’re looking for. Choose from Dragon Time, Cel-Lite Magic, Ortho Ease, Ortho Sport, Relaxation, or Sensation.

10. Beauty Treatments

FullWidthBannerNails.jpg

Your skin is glowing and renewed, so give yourself another confidence boost with a manicure and eyelash treatment! For your nails, choose a non-toxic nail polish brand like Butter, Dazzle Dry, Tenoverten, Sundays, and Côte. For your eyelashes, a new empty eyelash brush container with castor oil and Lavender Essential Oil. Apply to your lashes daily!

After your spa day at home, you will be ready for whatever new opportunities spring brings your way!

Healthy Alternatives to Easter Favorites

The Oily Home Companion

DSC03583edit.jpg

Hosting your friends for Easter lunch this year, but still wanting to stick to your health goals? We have you covered with these 3 easy tips for a healthier, yet still delicious, meal!

  1. Switch up your protein! Instead of choosing a protein loaded with saturated fat like ham or brisket, look for a lean protein option like roasted chicken or turkey. If you’re pressed for time, you can grab an organic rotisserie chicken. If you are cooking at home, you can use the Lemon Dill Dressing (recipe below) as the perfect flavor punch.

  2. Clean up your sides! Side dishes are the best way to add nutrients to your meal. Instead of only choosing mac’n’cheese, mashed potatoes, or creamed corn, add a variety of vegetables to the meal! Cook with small amounts of olive or avocado oil instead of using butter, and add flavor with fresh herbs, spices, or Young Living vitality oils instead of cheese and excess salt. Try out the recipes below for ideas!

  3. Reduce added sugar. Sugar can find its way into the meal from Easter egg candy to the dressing on the salad. Avoid sugar-sweetened beverages, consider stuffing the basket with a little less or healthier choices of treats, choose desserts without refined sugar, and make your own sauces and dressings!

Hasselback Sweet Potatoes

5-8 servings

FullWidthBannerPotato.jpg

Ingredients

  • 4-5 small to medium sweet potatoes

  • 1 ½ Tbsp coconut oil, melted

  • ½ clove garlic, minced

  • 2 drops Basil Vitality

  • 2 toothpick swirls Nutmeg Vitality

  • 2 toothpick swirls Cinnamon Bark Vitality

  3. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until sweet potatoes are cooked through. Optional: garnish with fresh parsley, chives, or green onions!

Lemon Dill Dressing

4-6 servings

FullWidthBannerDillDress.jpg

This dressing is the perfect addition to a simple, spring salad, or it can be used to flavor meat, asparagus, roasted potatoes, and more!

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup olive oil

  • 1 drop Dill Vitality

  • 1 clove garlic, minced

  • 3 Tbsp dijon mustard

  • 1 tsp honey

  • 3 Tbsp lemon juice

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Directions:

  1. Mix all ingredients together until they are blended. Serve immediately, or store in the refrigerator and re-mix before serving.

Healthier Carrot Cake

10-12 servings

FullWidthBannerCake.jpg

This recipe is adapted from the Laura Lee Balanced Dreamiest Carrot Cake.

Dry Ingredients:

  • 1 cup raw walnuts

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose gluten-free flour (Like Bob’s Red Mill)

  • 1 cup almond flour

  • 1 ¼ tsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp baking soda

  • ¼ tsp sea salt

  • ½ cup unsweetened shredded coconut

Wet Ingredients:

  • 2 cups shredded carrots

  • 8 oz container crushed pineapple in juice (not syrup)

  • ¾ cup honey

  • 3 large eggs

  • ½ cup avocado oil

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 2 drops Cinnamon Bark Vitality

  • 1 drop Nutmeg Vitality

Frosting:

  • 16 oz dairy-free, original cream cheese (Ex.: Kite Hill Brand)

  • ½ cup butter (can sub vegan butter here too)

  • ½ cup honey

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Spray a 10” deep quiche pan (ideally with removable bottom) with oil spray or grease with a thin layer of oil. Spread walnuts on a parchment paper-covered baking sheet. Roast 10-12 minutes, until slightly fragrant and toasted. Set aside when done.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together all dry ingredients, except coconut and walnuts. Add grated carrots to a blender and pulse until finely chopped (not pureed!). Add to a medium mixing bowl, along with remaining wet ingredients. Whisk thoroughly to combine.

  3. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients. Roughly chop walnuts and add ¾ cup to the batter, along with the shredded coconut. Mix well.

  4. Add batter to the prepared pan and spread in an even layer. Bake for 33-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out mostly clean. Allow to cool at least 1 hour before removing from pan.

  5. With a sharp knife, slice the cake into two discs. Laura Lee recommends to use a large, sharp knife and to push it into the center of the cake (from the side) then gently move the knife in a circle. Let the halves bake another 30 minutes.

  6. To make the frosting, combine all ingredients in the bowl of your standing mixer or in a mixing bowl, if using a hand-held mixer. Start on your lowest setting to mix the ingredients together, then increase the speed until the frosting is soft and fluffy. Frost the cake and assemble layers once it has cooled! You can top the cake with walnuts, shredded coconut, and/or crushed pineapple! If not serving immediately, store in the refrigerator.

A Day in an Oiler's Life

The Oily Home Companion

OHCDayinanoilerslifeBlogBannerv1.jpg

Mastering how to include all the benefits of Young Living’s Essential Oils into your life and routine can be intimidating at times! Trust us, we get it. There’s so many ways you can enjoy and use them all! But sometimes all you need is a little inspiration from people who really know how to take advantage of YL oils from sun up to sun down. So in an effort to motivate you with some real life routines, we’ve asked some of our OHC members to share different aspects of their days from start to finish, giving you a peek into their beautiful, oily lives! So let’s spend the day together!

Krista Jung

• 1-2 oz of Ningxia Red every day around 10 am has helped me through this Winter with a supported Immune System and gives me energy to get through the day with a toddler! Cheers to that!

• I use Aminowise during every workout! As a personal trainer, I recommend it to every client and friend I have! I do pretty strenuous workouts and sipping this during them gives me the energy to push through! I finish it up within 15 minutes after which helps my recovery immensely.

• I make Thieves wipes by mixing 2 capfuls if household cleaner with warm water to have easy access! I’m constantly cleaning up messes!

• My son knows the routine for Nap time (12:00pm) and bed time (7:30pm) for his oils (Cedarwood, Lavender, and Thieves)! He loves helping set them up! This blend has worked magic for us!

• At 1:00pm While my son naps, I get my computer work done!  Diffusing Stress Away, Peppermint, and Citrus Fresh helps keep me calm yet focused and I love seeing it diffuse into the air!

• I like rubbing this blend of Digize and Peppermint on my tummy! Even better, I ABSOLUTELY love making a capsule with Digize Vitality and Peppermint Vitality to support my digestive system.

• At 9:00 pm I love my Friday facial routine! I start with my Art Gentle Cleanser to get my makeup off (daily!), then I use my amazing Satin Mint Scrub and feel like I’m at the spa! This removes dirt and dead skin cells! Yuck! I then finish with Jojoba oil and Frankincense! It also helps calm me down which is great before bedtime!

Stephanie Johns

• We start our day with oral hygiene. Love thieves toothpaste for the win!

• A cup of coffee or tea is wonderful with a drop of one or more of these Vitality oils!

• Oats and Thieves Vitality for breakfast!!

• Love using Savvy Minerals and knowing they are good for my skin! Toxin-free makeup is so refreshing!

• Love taking Young living supplements!!

• We also diffuse throughout the day to help support all the things that need supporting.

• Progessence Plus and Endoflex are two of my favorite oils to use everyday!!

• We usually diffuse oils during our home school routine. Some of our favorites are Brain Power, Vetiver, Cedarwood and Geneyus!

• Ningxia Red is a great afternoon treat.

• We use Thieves Laundry Detergent and wool dryer balls for toxin-free laundry! Just add a few squirts of your favorite essential oil to the wool dryer balls and toss in the dryer!

• We even use oils when we clean throughout the day!

• Time for a relaxing detox bath!

Marisa Marlow

1. Diffusing Peppermint, Lemon and Frankincense for a early wake up at 6:00 am.

2.  Maven Lipgloss at 7:00AM  I love the look and feel of Savvy Minerals lipgloss.  They are so versatile no matter your skin tone.

3. My daily Ningxia with Endoflex vitality, microgreens, Sulfurzyme, and Super B.  I take it every morning around 7:00 am.

4. Ningxia Red and MightyVites in the morning before school for us.

5. Lemon oil 2:00PM : My 2 year old likes to get into her sister's colors.  Lemon oil helped me get the markings off that were down our hall today.

6. Slique tea for this Mama in the afternoon is a nice treat.

7. Taco night means homemade salsa.  Tip with using vitality oils, start with one drop at a time and taste.  It doesn't take very much. For stronger oils, like basil, you can dip a tooth pick in the oil then add to your dish.

8. Chocolate mask 8:30 PM : It's spa night at our house.  This feels so good on your skin, making it feel so soft after you are done.  One trick is to follow the direction and use the double boiler technique. My fifteen year old tried a few months ago, putting it into the microwave.  No Bueno!

Elizabeth Ector

1. When I wake up, I apply Endoflex over my thyroid, and digize in a circle around my belly button.

2. Then I usually pick an emotional blend based on my mood or Frankincense to place in my palms, rub together, cup my hands over my nose and take 3 deep breaths before I spend time reading the Bible and journaling.  I rub the extra over my heart and behind my ears.

3. I love brushing my teeth with Thieves Dentarome Plus toothpaste and washing my face with the Mint Satin Facial Scrub. I’m not a morning person ha, so it helps me wake up and feel fresh!

4. Lavender Lip Balm and Orange Blossom Moisturizer before I start my Savvy Makeup Routine.  Which usually consists of Warm 2 as foundation, Dark 1 as contour, crowned All Over bronzer, Savvy Mascara, and Multitasker as brow filler!

5. I take a shot of Ningxia Red mixed with Red Shot (if I’m lucky) or Thieves Vitality as my afternoon pick-me up.

6. Digize usually goes around my belly button another time after dinner.

7. Cinnamint Lip balm is always in my purse or pocket on-the-go. If I have a hot date ;) or going out with friends, I like Oola Friends behind my ears and by my collar bone instead of perfume!

8. Nighttime: Thieves dental floss in addition to my morning routine.

9. I usually have a different blend each night for my diffuser.  One of my favorites is Patchouli, Orange, Vetiver and Clove.

10. Frankincense and Lavender all over my face plus the Acne Treatment Spot Treatment as needed, Digize on my belly (yep, one more time.), Dragon Time on my lower abdomen, Endoflex over my thyroid, and White Angelica on my shoulders (or another emotional blend based on how the day went.)

11. I actually sleep with my oil case in the bed next to me. If I wake up from a bad dream in the middle of the night I grab White Angelica and rub it on my shoulders, over my heart and breathe it in.

Megan Crowell

• Every morning before rushing out the door for school my 4 yo and I each enjoy a shot of Ningxia Red! 7:15am

• Every morning Madi gets “oils on” Thieves down her spine and Peace and Calming (or as she calls it listening and following directions oil) on her forearms and behind her ears to help her listen and follow directions.

• I’ll never be caught without Stress Away in the car, whether it’s traffic, people not pulling over for EMS or someone littering I always seem to need to roll this all over my neck while driving

• A few drops to my corn salsa with lime vitality really makes it pop!

• No fragrance and no sodium laurel sulfate are just two reasons I choose Thieves Dish Soap and Thieves Hand Soap.  #nonastytoxins

• One of the first toxins I switched out three years ago were the things I was washing my baby girl with.  The products I was using before that you’re probably using now are filled with harmful chemicals that cause things like infertility, asthma, cancer and more.  Once I learned about this how could I in good Conscience continue to slather her with chemicals like that! no way!  We’ve been using the Kidscents line for years now and it is so soft on her skin I don’t even need to use lotion on her!

• Thieves on my feet, Frankincense on my face, Endoflex on my throat and Joy over my heart.... errrryday!

Spring Break Travel Essentials Checklist

The Oily Home Companion

leo-rivas-130488-unsplash.jpg

Spring Break is your moment to escape the responsibilities of work and everyday tasks, and jump into the warmth and relaxing vibes of the season. If you’re hitting the beach or other sunny spots this year, don’t leave home without packing this 10 piece travel capsule of non-toxic products to protect your skin, boost your immune system, and ease any stressors that come with travel.

1. Young Living Sunscreen

MineralSunscreen.jpg

Sunscreen is our best defense against the negative effects of sun exposure, including wrinkles, sunburn, and skin cancer. If you’re not one to burn easily in the sun, that doesn’t mean you aren’t at risk for skin damage. Using a natural sunscreen will protect you from damaging rays, but will also allow you to get the benefits of the sun, such as vitamin D exposure. While we may be tempted to opt for higher SPF sunscreens, the higher SPF simply indicates a higher concentration of sun protectant chemicals, which means you may be applying a range of chemicals to your skin and letting those bake in the heat. No bueno! But we have good news! You can get protection from both UVA and UVB rays, and avoid harsh chemical ingredients, with Young Living’s Mineral Sunscreen Lotion. The formula is made from naturally derived plant and mineral based ingredients. This should be at the top of your list for any trips during spring and summer months! We like to stock up early to make sure we don’t run out!

2. Young Living Lip Balm

LipBalm.jpg

While you’re protecting your skin from the sun, don’t forget to also protect your lips! The skin on our lips is without sebaceous glands, which produce oil and naturally moisturize skin. They also don’t have melanin, which provides natural protection from the sun. Young Living Lip Balm is packed with vitamin E to provide moisture and protection for your lips! There are a few different balms you can choose from, including lavender, cinnamint, and grapefruit. Young Living Lavender Lip Balm is perfect for time in the sun!

3. Young Living Insect Repellent

InsectRepellant2.jpg

If you’re planning to be outside during the warmer months, insect repellent is a must! Many insects, like mosquitos, can carry harmful diseases, which is not the kind of souvenir you want to bring home from your trip! If you tend to say no to repellent due to the harsh, chemical smell or the sticky layer it leaves on your skin, we’ve got good news for you! Young Living Insect Repellent is made with citronella instead of deet, which is found in most store-bought repellents. Studies have linked deet to negative health effects such as rashes, headaches, dizziness, and brain fog. Not the price you want to pay to avoid insects. With Young Living Citronella, you don’t have to worry about fake citronella fragrance that fries your nose hairs. This repellant is light and airy. Pure citronella keeps away nasty insects, but also smells amazing! It has many other health benefits, too, such as promoting relaxation. Positives for the entire family!

4. Lava-Derm After-Sun Spray

Lavaderm2.jpg

While Young Living Sunscreen can protect your skin from sunburn and insect repellent can protect from bug bites, sometimes we forget to apply them often enough, or we end up on an outdoor adventure we weren’t expecting. For those moments, Lavaderm After-Sun Spray is there to help! This product provides immediate, temporary relief, and soothes your skin from painful, itchy sunburns or insect bites. Keeping this product on hand ensures that your family can continue enjoying your vacation despite the little mishaps that may happen along the way.

5. Young Living Essential Oils

Our bodies all respond differently to travel, so it’s important to pack essential oils to prevent and remedy whatever may come for you and your family. For stress during your travel days, try adding a drop of Stress Away behind your ears and on your wrists. For digestive discomfort, add a drop of Digize Vitality to your water. For quality sleep in an unfamiliar place, diffuse or add a few drops to your pillow of Lavender. For sore muscles after day of walking or running in the sand, soak in a warm bath and add a few drops of PanAway. For nausea or car sickness, have Peppermint handy to apply behind the ears or inhale for quick relief. You know your family better than anyone else, so take time to consider what needs may arise and gear up with the best essential oils for them!

6. NingXia Red Pouches and Thieves Hand Sanitizer

Traveling can be tough on the immune system, even if you’re feeling stress-free on the beach. Give your system an added boost by taking a NingXia Red Single shot each morning. These are antioxidant-rich, and made up juices and extracts of aronia, plum, blueberry, pomegranate, and exotic wolfberries. It never hurts to put up an extra guard against the bacteria you will find in airports, gas stations, public restrooms, and other shared spaces. Speaking of, Thieves Hand Sanitizer and Spray are a must have! When we enter a hotel room or rental we spray all the things commonly touched and the toilet, shower and sink. You can never be sure how clean they are or what the health is of those who came before you or even those cleaning.

7. AromaGuard Deodorant

Deodorant.jpg

Warmer weather brings on more sweat, which can bring on unwanted odors. Prevent the stink by packing your AromaGuard Deodorant. Young Living deodorants are aluminum-free and made up of natural ingredients, including coconut oil, beeswax, vitamin E, and pure essential oils. They also have two fresh scents to choose from: Mountain Mint and Meadow Mist. Forgot the deo? We have been known to use Thieves toothpaste or Tea Tree oil instead in a pinch!

8. Sunglasses

Sunglasses2.jpg

You know sun exposure can damage our skin, but did you know that it can also cause damage to your eyes? There are studies that suggest eye damage, such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and other eye problems, may be linked to overexposure to the sun. Look for sunglasses that include protection from UVA and UVB rays with about 95-100% blockage. Not only will you look stylish in your new shades, but you’ll also increase your chances of aging well with healthy eyes. Win-win! Pro tip: those antioxidants from Ningxia Red are good for your eyes too!

9. Water Bottle

SpringBreak_WaterBottle.jpg

Hydration is so very important for healthy skin, digestion, and body function. When traveling, it’s easy to forget to drink as much water as you usually do because it may not always be available. Drinking water from plastic bottles could increase your risk of being exposed to toxic chemicals from the plastic. Also, water from taps when traveling can’t be trusted and can be worse than some plastic water bottle sources. Prevent all of this by bringing your own water bottle, preferably one that filters and is BPA-Free. Some favorite brands are Hydroflask, S’well, Klean Kanteen, Camelbak, and bKr.

10. Beach Bag

If you’re hitting the sand on your vacation, don’t forget a canvas beach bag. Seems simple, but you don’t want to make the mistake of finding sand in your favorite purse or backpack for the following year. Find a beach bag with pockets and compartments so you can quickly pack in all of the items above for easy travel!

What are some of your favorite travel must-haves?

Non-Toxic Spring Cleaning Using Young Living’s Essential Oils

The Oily Home Companion

paige-cody-1276949-unsplash.jpg

Are you feeling a need for a refresh in your life after a cold, dark winter? Spring cleaning is a great way to welcome the coming season of growth, joy, and warmth. When you start refreshing your home, you will open the door to refresh other areas of your life, whether it’s your health, relationships, or spirit. Create an environment in your home that will allow these areas of your life to flourish, like the wildflowers springing up from the ground!

Spring cleaning may be an overwhelming task to think about, but we are here to help! These 10 steps will guide you through the cleaning process in a way that is energizing and non-toxic. Did you know you can incorporate your Young Living oils into your cleaning processes? This post is loaded with recipes and ideas to help you not only clean the spaces in your home, but also guard your family from toxic chemicals found in conventional cleaning products. It may even save you a little money and time, since you can make these at home with only a few ingredients!

1. Out with the old, in with the new

Before you begin deep cleaning your home, take time to go through the spaces in your home to get rid of the things that are no longer useful, or no longer spark joy in your life (thanks, Marie Kondo!). You can sell or donate these items to create space and add a little more peace to the home. Then, you can use the money you got with the old to get something new that would add value to your space. You can grab a new outfit that helps you feel confident or new pillows for your couches that mirror the bright colors of spring. This is also the time where you want to tidy things up, so that deep cleaning can be done with ease.

You can also set the tone for tidying up by diffusing springtime scents in the home. Try one of these blends for energize your senses and prep the home for the new!

2. Throw a DIY party to mix your cleaners

You can throw a solo party, or get your family and friends involved, but it’s important to get your cleaners mixed and ready to go before you start cleaning. This will help you save time and keep your cleaning flow going strong once you start. What you need: Glass spray bottles and sealed jars, Thieves Household Cleaner, Castile liquid soap, white vinegar, baking soda, salt, olive oil, labels for jars/bottles (optional, but helpful), funnel to pour ingredients into the bottles, and your favorite essential oils (lemon, orange, tea tree, lavender, pine, thieves, purification, eucalyptus, etc.).

ThievesBanner.jpg

All Purpose Cleaner

Mix 1 capful Thieves Household Cleaner and 3 cups of water in a glass spray bottle.

Stainless Steel Polish

Mix ½ cup olive oil, ½ cup white vinegar, and 20 drops essential oils (lemon + orange, or grapefruit + lime are good options!) to a glass spray bottle.

Deep Clean Scrub

Mix 1 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner and 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda to form a thick paste.

Window/Glass Cleaner

Mix 1 capful of Thieves Household cleaner, 4 cups of water, 1 tsp of white vinegar, and 5 drops of lemon or citrus fresh essential oil in glass bottle.

Refrigerator Deodorizer

In a small, uncovered bowl, add baking soda and a few drops of lemon essential oil. Store in a corner of your fridge for lasting freshness.

Carpet Cleaner

Combine 2 cups baking soda with 30 drops of essential oils of choice in a jar. Seal jar and shake to mix well.

Reusable Dryer Sheets

To start, gather fabric from old towels or clothing. Cut into long strips. In a glass jar, add ½ cup white vinegar with 6-10 drops of Lavender or Purification essential oils. Add fabric strips and make sure they are soaked in the mixture. Seal and store. When ready to use, take a strip, ring it out, and throw it in the dryer.  If you want to keep it simple, buy organic wool dryer balls and drop Lemongrass or Lavender essential oils on the wool balls. You can also use Young Living’s Seedling Baby Wipes as a dryer sheet.

Oven Cleaner Recipe from OHC Member Christina Escajeda

Mix 2 parts baking soda to 1 part Thieves Cleaner and 10 drops of Lemon Essential Oil to a jar. Store until ready to use.

Garbage Disposal Fresheners

Combine 1 cup baking soda and ½ cup salt in a bowl. Add ¾ cup Castile liquid soap and 30 drops essential oils (your choice!), and mix well. Add water, 1 Tbsp at a time, until the mixture is the texture of wet sand. Pack mixture into a 1 Tbsp measuring spoon, then release by tapping gently on the counter (be careful because they can easily break apart). Let dry for 24 hours, then store in a sealed glass jar.

 Wood Cleaner

Mix 1 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner, 1 cup of olive oil, and about 10 drops of either lemon, pine, or citrus fresh to give off a spring scent! Be sure to test in an inconspicuous area first before using it for the rest of the surface.

3. Start with the carpet

Six-Non-Toxic-Ways-to-Jumpstart-Your-Spring-Cleaning-With-Essential-Oils-Thieves-Cleaner-Carpet.jpg

Remove everything you can from your carpet, then grab your carpet cleaner.  Use a spoon to shake liberally onto the carpet. Let sit for at least an hour, then vacuum. We start here because this needs to set, but you can also do this step last if you have an hour to spare at the end of your day.

4. Move to the ceiling

KitchenCeiling.jpg

Grab your broom and duster to remove any dust from your fans and fixtures on the ceiling. Remove any cobwebs or dust hiding in the corners. After you remove the surface dust, you can use the all purpose cleaner and glass cleaner to wipe down the surfaces.

5. Spruce up surfaces

Grab your different cleaners and clean off all surfaces in the home. Dust your bookshelves and items hanging on the walls, and wipe down tables and countertops. Clean the glass in your home with the window/glass cleaner and a paper towel or newspaper. For windows, make sure you get to the inside and outside. Give yourself plenty of time here to reach corners and surfaces you wouldn’t normally clean. Don’t forget the surfaces of your couches and chairs. If you can remove cushion covers, go ahead and run them through the washing machine. If not, use the handheld attachment on your vacuum to clean them off. For added freshness, spray a mix of water and your favorite essential oil onto the surface when you’re done!

6. Scrub the oven and stove top, and clear out the fridge

The kitchen can be one of the dirtiest rooms in the home, and kitchen equipment rarely gets the love it needs to stay in tip-top shape. Take your oven cleaner and apply the mixture to the inside of the oven. Let it sit for 20-30 minutes, then use a scrub brush to remove the more difficult areas, and use a clean cloth for the easy parts in the oven. For the stove, you can use the deep clean scrub to remove tough spots, and your all purpose cleaner for the rest of the surface. If you have stainless steel appliances, finish them off with your stainless steel polish. You can do the same for your microwave, and any other appliances in the kitchen. For your refrigerator and freezer, clear out any expired foods and scrub tough spots first with your deep clean scrub. Clean the drawers and surfaces with your all purpose cleaner, or Thieves Wipes, and clean the glass surfaces with your glass cleaner. Pop in your refrigerator deodorizer for the final touch!

7. Brave the bathrooms

OHC_bathroom.jpg

The bathroom may not be the most fun to clean, but it’s the place in your home where you spend most of your morning and evening routines. For your guests, the bathroom is a safe place for them to also start and end their day. Keep that in mind as you scrub to ignite gratitude for the space. Use the deep clean scrub for the toilet, bathtub, and shower to remove any mold, mildew, or funk. If there’s a decent buildup in the tub or shower, it’s a good idea to go ahead and replace your shower liner. Once the tough spots are gone, use your all purpose cleaner to wipe down the remaining surfaces and faucets. Once everything is clean, dry out the surfaces in the shower with a squeegee or dry cloth. Clean off your sinks with the all purpose cleaner, and clean all mirrors with your glass cleaner. To keep the freshness going all year long, add a diffuser to a shelf or sink to fill the room with energizing and relaxing scents each day!

8. Freshen up trash cans and drawers

OHC_Drawer.jpg

These spaces are easily forgotten in our cleaning process. Take your trash can outside, if you have a waterhose, to rinse it out. Then, use an all purpose cleaner or Thieves Wipes to wipe out the inside. You can add a few drops of an essential oil, like lemon or purification, to keep things fresh. For drawers and cabinets, remove items and wipe out the insides with all purpose cleaner, all the way into the corners. Take time to put everything back in a neat, orderly way to avoid messy spaces moving forward.

9. Clean the floors

Your carpet cleaner has been sitting for a couple of hours now, so you can finish the carpet by vacuuming everything up. For floors, grab a Libman mop and fill the container with a mix of water and Thieves Household Cleaner. For vinyl and tile, you can use the same recipe for all purpose cleaner. Have your deep clean scrub handy for any tough spots. For hardwood, use the recipe for wood cleaner. Test this out on a small piece of the floor first before cleaning the rest of the floor. Don’t forget to get to your bathrooms, bedrooms, and closets.

LinnensBannerv2.jpg

10. Finish with fresh linens

You should be washing sheets and pillowcases every week or so, so use this time to go even further by washing your pillows (check the label instructions) and comforter. Before you begin, take time to disinfect your washing machine. Run the machine on hot water, then add white vinegar, baking soda, and a few drops of lemon essential oil to the machine. Pause the wash cycle and let sit for 30-60 minutes. Restart the machine, let the water drain, and wipe dry. For your linens, use the Thieves Laundry Soap for a non-toxic, but effective clean! This is also a great time to flip your mattresses and switch out any decorative pillows you use!

Bonus!

Don’t forget the outside of your home! Once you’re done cleaning the inside of your home, bring some of the joy to the outside of your home. Clean patio furniture, clear off porches, power wash the sides of the home, and remove weeds to prepare for planting spring flowers.

Date Night In — His & Her Essential Oils

The Oily Home Companion

Love is in the air, and we can’t decide if that’s because there’s less daylight and it’s cold outside or if it’s because the calendar, stores, and commercials are all conditioning us for Valentine’s Day? At any rate - who cares?! We’re going with it!

Verick and I often get asked what oils we like to wear, and sometimes people are bold enough to ask us more pointed questions like, “What oils do you like to wear for date night?” If they’re feeling extra brazen, they may ask, “Do those oils for the bedroom really work like people say they do?” I can’t blame them. It does seem a little too good to be true that using oils could in some way help enhance your love life. But despite it being a little strange to talk about in mixed company, we’ve decided to share a few of our secrets right here on the web. Yep! We’re going there. But no worries, we’ll keep it PG.

Men and women are created with beautifully unique characteristics, and one thing we learned a few years into our venture was that essential oils can be used to enhance and support both males and females in unique ways.

Oils for him that she’ll LOVE:

Shutran Essential Oil

Shutran is one of Verick’s favorites, and I’ll never forget when Gary Young, the beloved late founder of YL, came out with the blend. All the men were excited to have their very own oil customized for them. Excitement hit the internet with memes, t-shirts, and praises from the men of Young Living who were proud to wear and share about their oil. The ladies melted over the scent of their Shutran men, and a whole product line was created. They say it stimulates feelings of masculinity and confidence for men, but I really think it was specially formulated to be a magnet for women! My hubby uses it topically as a cologne, but he also uses many of the Shutran products for men, including shave cream, aftershave, bar soap, beard oil, and body wash!

Valor Essential Oil

Valor was one of the first oils I tried on my man to help him have a more restful night sleep. Let’s just say a certain rumor of applying Valor to the big toe spiked my curiousity enough to try it with him before bed. All I can say is, however it works, I don’t care. As long as it works! I want to caution you though, this is not a solution to problems such as needing to lose weight or sleep apnea. However, if getting an extra good night’s sleep or quieting a noisy sleeper is what you’re in search for, this oil will promote calming and restorative sleep FOR ALL! Valor has also been dubbed as “the unicorn oil” as it’s a unique blend that may promote feelings of confidence and stability. This blend can be diffused for a balancing and grounding aroma in the middle of a challenging day or to promote courage before presentations, meetings, or tests. It can just as effectively be used at the end of the day for calming and relaxing. That’s the mystique of valor and its endless uses!

Northern Lights Black Spruce

Woodsy with a slightly sweet undertone. Earthy, yet not pungent. Spruce draws women and men alike, and has been known to be an attractant oil. Men like it for the strong and confident feelings it promotes. Women like their men to wear it, and they love to diffuse it. It’s a win win. Plus, Young Living’s very own Northern Lights Farm produces the Black Spruce that has become mine and my hubby’s favorite.

Cedarwood

Have you ever stood in a Cedar forest, opened a Cedar chest, or smelled Young Living’s Cedarwood Oil? If so, you know what I mean when I say that it is full on delight. Not only does it ground you, but it also promotes relaxation and creativity – both things more couples could use in the bedroom. Right?

Oils for her that’s he’ll LOVE:

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Ylang Ylang is a sweet, floral, balancing oil that can be worn as a natural perfume or diffused to create a romantic, peaceful atmosphere. I have had the joy of standing in the Ylang Ylang field on Young Living’s farm in Ecuador. I’ll never forget the sweet aroma mixed with the longing for my man to be there with me experiencing it. On top of Ylang Ylang’s pleasent fragrance, this oil has long been touted for its ability to balance male and female energies.

White Angelica

This light and airy oil blend is not only a beautiful choice for a distinct perfume that will have him weak in his knees at first whiff, but it’s also extremely calming and settling, making it an easy choice for her. This is one blend I never knew I was missing until I tried it, and I’m so glad I did!

Stress Away Essential Oil Blend

Stress Away is a unique essential oil blend known for it’s “beachy” scent of coconut and vanilla, with a hint of lime.  It can be added to an epsom salt bath or diffused to create a calming and peaceful atmosphere. It can also be used in a massage. Create a getaway at home, and use this blend to cement the memories.

Increasing Romance through Oils

It’s amazing that oils can enhance romance and connectedness for couples, right? To create a romantic environment when you are spending time together, try diffusing Joy or Sensation Essential Oil Blends. To connect with physical touch, give each other a massage using Sensation Massage Oil, which incorporates Ylang Ylang, Jasmine, Geranium, and other essential oils. There are many more oils that can benefit couples on top of the ones mentioned here, along with various uses for each, so it’s at this point I am going to pass the torch over to my friend Lucy Libido who is THE BEST at explaining this subject on her website. Get experimenting with these oils, get creative, and most of all, have fun this winter!
